In the article, Mr. Singh mentions that:
Well, apparently Singh does not know how to use search engines. AltaVista and Excite (I found that Inktomi isn't even a search engine) both do OR searches by default, and even if they did AND searches, there's Apple Records (the Beatles' recording company), apple crops/trees/orchards, AppleOne Employment Services, etc. So I did my own searches:
| Who did the search | What search engine | Terms used | Boolean used | Number of results found |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Jai Singh of news.com | AltaVista | beleaguered Apple | OR | 1219985 |
| Mac-arena of the GMU | AltaVista | +beleaguered +Apple +Computer +Inc | AND (+ before a term makes it required in the found document[s].) | 10 |
| Jai Singh | Excite | beleaguered Apple | OR | 454331 |
| Mac-arena | Excite | beleaguered Apple computer inc | AND (I used Excite's Power Search's "MUST contain words" function.) | 284 |
One thing worth noting: One of the files I found in AltaVista was "Good news for Apple", on Macworld, and another was about Apple abandoning videoconferencing. (Since the latter document is not related to the "Beleaguered Apple" story, I failed to investigate it.) According to the "Good news for Apple" article:
So, we've found that Mr. Singh's "evidence" is not as strong as he thought, eh? Let's look even further - with his own terms!:
| Who did the search | What search engine | Terms used | Boolean used | Number of results found |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Jai Singh of news.com | AltaVista (I don't know what kind of search he used) | beleaguered Apple | OR | 1219985 |
| Mac-arena of the GMU | AltaVista (Simple Search) | beleaguered Apple | OR | 980470 |
| Mac-arena | AltaVista (Advanced Search) | beleaguered Apple | OR | 69 |
And as for Excite:
| Who did the search | What search engine | Terms used | Boolean used | Number of results found |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Jai Singh of news.com | Excite (I don't know what kind of search he used) | beleaguered Apple | OR | 454331 |
| Mac-arena of the GMU | Excite (Simple Search) | beleaguered Apple | OR | 454331 |
| Mac-arena | Excite (Power Search) | beleaguered Apple | OR | 284 |
So only Excite Let's get away from that now tho, as we are beginning to beat a dead horse. He also says:
Not in my experience on Undernet's #macintosh IRC (Internet Relay Chat) channel. It seems to me the WinTroopers, if you will, are getting more desperate; judging from the relative frequency of Wintel attacks on the channel.
In conclusion, Singh's bio reads:
Maybe that explains it.
